Kurds — 30 to 40 million people by various estimates — live mainly where Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Syria meet. The Kurdistan Region of Iraq has autonomy recognised in Iraq's 2005 constitution, its own government in Erbil and the Peshmerga forces. In north-east Syria the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) signed an agreement with Damascus in March 2025 to merge into state institutions.

The PKK's armed conflict with Turkey has run since 1984; in May 2025 the PKK announced it would disband and lay down arms, but Turkish operations in the mountains of northern Iraq and tensions around the process continue. Iran has struck camps of Iranian Kurdish opposition groups in Iraqi Kurdistan, and the region's oil and gas fields and the Erbil area have been targeted by drone attacks.

The map collects reported drone and rocket attacks, airstrikes, clashes, protests and statements from Iraqi Kurdistan, north-east Syria and the Turkish and Iranian border areas — usually a few to a dozen or so reports a week. Every event has a time, a place and a source; the map does not settle political disputes, it shows what was reported and where.

Every event pinned to the Kurdistan map includes a title (in the original language plus automatic translations into 20 languages), a UTC timestamp, a category (strike, shelling, troop movement, diplomatic escalation), and a link to the original news source. Data can be filtered by date, category, or bounding box. Events older than 30 days are accessible only through the keyed REST API.

The map supports fullscreen mode, dark and light themes, infinite-scroll event lists, and — for Ukraine — an additional territorial-control layer based on publicly available cartographic data (updated daily). Every title can be reported as fake news; moderators review submissions daily.

New to the terminology? The OSINT, ADS-B and AIS glossary explains the terms used in event titles (front line, geolocation, Shahed drones, HIMARS, SAF/RSF, Houthis), and the battleMap FAQ covers data sources, update frequency and the API.
