Al-Shabaab (Harakat al-Shabaab al-Mujahideen), formally affiliated with al-Qaeda since 2012, has waged an insurgency against Somalia's federal government in Mogadishu since the mid-2000s and controls large rural areas of central and southern Somalia. The government is backed by an African Union mission — AUSSOM since 1 January 2025, replacing ATMIS — and US forces (AFRICOM) carry out airstrikes against al-Shabaab and the local Islamic State branch.
In Puntland, in the north-east, regional forces are fighting Islamic State militants in the Cal Miskaad mountains. Al-Shabaab regularly carries out bombings in Mogadishu and attacks on military bases, as well as raids in Kenya's border counties.
The map shows reported clashes, airstrikes, bombings and statements by the parties — usually a few a week, and some weeks bring none; each with a time, a place and a link to its source. Titles are translated automatically. The map takes no political side; it shows what was reported and where.
